Maama was originally a volleyball player, growing up in South Auckland and played for the Maukau South Volleyball Club. She was named in the NZSS Tournament team and went on to represent the junior NZ team in Florida in 2019. In the same year she attended the Asian volleyball championships with the team. Her breakthrough rugby season came in 2022 when she started most games at lock for the Auckland Storm. She got her first taste of nib Blues rugby in 2023.
She was impressive throughout the 2024 Aupiki campaign, continuing her upward trajectory and was rewarded with her first Black Ferns contract. (Black Fern #259). She scored her first try for the Black Ferns against the USA in Hamilton and was again a member of the Black Ferns for the WXV tournament in Canada. 2025 has seen Maama once again selected to represent the Black Ferns in the Pacific Four Series.
